Include all of your contact information, your current email address, in your résumé document file. Remember, recruiters use the zip codes, telephone area codes, cities, states, as well as skill sets to find the right applicant in their files. Here are a few suggestions that may help you when you submit your résumé to any company.

(1)  Never include your Social Security Number or your birth date in your “posted” résumé.  This information will make it much easier for dishonest individuals to steal your identity.

(2)  If you include a cover letter; make it the first page of your résumé document.  Remember, most companies only save one document, the résumé. Additional documents like cover letters and reference lists will most likely be lost or discarded.

(3)  If you hold an active security clearance or have held and active clearance in the last 24 months; don’t bury it in the body of your résumé. List your clearance status in the beginning or at the end of your résumé document.

(4)  How long should your résumé be?  This is a matter of personal preference, however, today’s technical résumés need to be longer than the average résumé. As a guideline, the body of your résumé should include one page for every six years of employment.   In this manner, you can define your job title, duties, responsibilities, and the hardware and software product skills and experience by name.

(5)  Your résumé represents an example of your professional writing and documentation skills. Use Spell Check

(6)   Define your U.S. Citizenship Status at the top or the bottom of your résumé.

(7)   Education Background:  Be precise and accurate for all Institution Names, the degree you earned and duration dates.  There is a long list of Fake University Names and Bogus Degree sites; you don’t want your educational background being confused with any of those falsified sites or online services.  These sites even produce falsified degree verification numbers and falsified Skill Certification codes.

Most recruiters use the Department of Education’s Directory of Post-Secondary Educational Institutions as a first step validate college and University degrees.  If you wish to verify the precise manner in which your institution is listed you can go to the following site:   http://www.ope.ed.gov/accreditation/search.asp
